Laboratory of Hydrobiology is part of the Institute of Biology and Ecology of Faculty of Science, University of Kragujevac. Researches are related to the study of plankton communities, benthos and nekton of freshwater ecosystems in terms of biodiversity, biological monitoring and sustainable use of resources.

Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity and Fishing in inland waters - AQUARIUM is a separate organizational unit of Institute for Biology and Ecology of Faculty of Science. The Center was founded in 1999th per preliminary design of professor Simić, because of the need of active protection, grow and reproduction of the increasing number of hydro-bionics in strictly controlled artificial conditions. Aquarium is the only facility of its kind in Serbia, which has so far toured over 500 000 visitors, mostly students from our country and region, as well as a large number of foreign delegations and scholars. It covers an area of around 500 m2. In this area are exposed aquariums and terrariums whose total volume is over 60 000 liters. In the exhibition area of the Aquarium is situated collection of freshwater organisms of our country and of the Balkan Peninsula, Europe, Asia, Africa, America and Australia.

Units of Aquarium

  • The basic exhibition consisting of geographic areas that are organized to include the fauna of our country, Europe and the distant continents, as well as special units that illustrate the different types of aquatic ecosystems;
  • Laboratory for experimental hatchery that is used for scientific and professional work in the field of reproductive biology of fish and crustaceans;
  • Laboratory for cryopreservation.

The importance Aquarium

  • The presentation and conservation of natural resources and diversity of wildlife of freshwater ecosystems,
  • Ex situ programs of endangered species,
  • Gene bank of indigenous biodiversity of fish and macroinvertebrates of Serbia in the form of living populations and sexual products (cryopreservation - sperm cells)
  • Forming and maintaining databases of biodiversity of inland waters,
  • Education of students, preschool and school children and citizens,
  • Strengthening the biological and ecological awareness of the need for conservation of inland waters,
  • Improvement of the tourist offer of the city of Kragujevac.
